Dvorák New World Symphony
Akpabot’s Three Nigerian Dances carries the musical traditions and culture of West Africa to a Western audience by crafting Nigerian sounds with Western instruments. Though the work finds its origins in the traditional dances of Africa, it resonates the worldwide euphonic reflection of joy.
Mejía’s Pequeña Suite (Oklahoma premiere) is the symphonic embodiment of the Andes Mountains and the traditional dances of the Colombian people surrounding them. And like the mountains’ muse, it moves from the bambuco, to the torbellino and cumbia in exuberant finale.
The rivetingly talented Colombian dancers Diana Gómez and Andrés Figueroa, from our very own Tulsa Ballet, will take the stage for one movement from Pequeña Suite. Dancers from Tulsa Ballet II will dance a separate movement.
Dvořák’s New World Symphony is considered to be one of the most admired symphonies of all time. It accompanied the maiden voyage of the Apollo 11 in 1969. The composer was inspired by both African-American spirituals and Native-American dances. This renowned work brings its audience to the moon and back.
Presented in partnership with Tulsa Ballet.
